Xunantunich Mayan Ruins
Include the beautiful archeological site Xunantunich Mayan Ruins in your Belize travel.
A line of craft stalls as you arrive into town marks the landing for the ferry. You get to cross the Mopan River on a unique hand cranked ferry and then it’s 1-mile up to the site. There’s no cost but it’s a good idea to tip the operator as you have to return the same way, and a friendly operator is always in your favor. It’s also advisable to hire a guide, as they are very knowledgeable, give you a professional tour, an unbelievable fantastic insight into the local culture and your patronage is integral to their well being.
The site is remarkable and your guide will give you the history on the rooms, the Mayan calendar, sacrificial altars, ball fields, and timelines of all the structures you will visit. The tour culminates with a climb to the top of El Castillo, the second tallest pyramid in Belize, affording spectacular views of the surrounding Belize and Guatemalan countryside. A millennium ago this are was a bustling city with many thousands of inhabitants.
On our walk to the site Rosario our guide shared her knowledge of the local flora, explaining in detail the medicinal uses of numerous plants and trees. It was a fascinating and rewarding experience. She really added to our Belize travel experience and made it special.
Xunantunich lies just off the Western highway in San Jose Succotz, about 15 minutes West of San Ignacia Belize, and just before the border with Guatemala.
